Using an Irrigation Apparatus
You can also try an irrigation apparatus. This is an electric device that is used in much the same manner as the neti pot. It provides a more aggressive cleansing because the water is pressurized. The irrigation apparatus should be used once or twice daily for chronic conditions or more often when you are experiencing a flare-up.
I personally use an irrigation apparatus. I feel that in bad cases it breaks the infection up better
than a neti pot. A neti pot is, however, enough for mild cases of infection. Use the irrigation device the same way you use the neti pot. After irrigating with the irrigation apparatus,
you should do the same toe touching exercises that I described for the neti pot so that the saline completely drains from your sinuses (7). You can get an irrigation device in certain pharmacies or via the Internet.
The saline solution used during irrigation will not always get past the blockages and will not enter the most remote cells. In addition, it will seep into some of the cells and get caught there, only to result in potential streams of water dripping from your nose later in the day. Unfortunately, this usually occurs at the most inopportune times, like when you are out on a romantic evening or when you are talking to your boss. This is nothing to worry about except that it might be a little embarrassing. Nevertheless, the way to avoid this is to stretch and place your head in different directions after irrigating, thereby completely draining your sinuses.
